Economy... The U.S. auto industry needs to change its rather arrogant culture...

For years it used to perplex me why smaller but more energy efficient and better designed model cars made by Ford and GM in Europe were not similarly being produced in the U.S....  and why simultaneously there were hardly any U.S. built cars visible, yet Japanese and Korean made models were increasingly dotting the old continent. That the American industry would lose its edge in automotive manufacturing and technology is hardly a surprise, primarily because of the greedy shift in focus to profits rather the products by industry management... and as well, the selfish  and unrealistic demands by the industry's labor union represented work force. Obviously, then became the unspoken collusion to not share common goals between industry management and the union bodies... each going their own direction with self -destructive" stubbornness... short-sighted profit margins and incoherent labor market approach to issues by the various worker groups, thus the gradual ebb to its current decline needing bailouts else bankruptcies..

Bailout?  Yes, to a degree where the industry is willing to re-invent itself.... allowing energy and environmental issues to dictate its products with landmark innovations... and workers willing to submit to constructive concessions and focus towards a rational relationship... otherwise, it might serve better in the long run if perhaps allowed to hit bottom and let spring back up instead with new product visions propelled by present and future industry realities... with its work force becoming more realistic in their demands and pro-active in their participation.  A bit of humility now might just be the ticket quickest to earn back the industry leadership the U.S. once pioneered.
