When in Rome, roam... Indeed, wear a pair of comfortable walking shoes and the city won't cease to surprise and delight you. Just don't be faint-hearted when crossing or you'll find yourself repeatedly engaged in an awkward street dance. Once you have your route generally mapped out, just let loose. The "piazza's" which dot the city proper every three or four blocks every which way, will guide you to progress along the right directions. Of course you may veer off for wine and cheese, or coffee and pastries.... or for whatever tastes Italy easily invites you to indulge in. After all, you'll already be ahead of the game on calorie count. And... anyway, your plan is to include finishing out the day's walk up the Spanish steps, isn't it?
