Sports and Global Politics... The 2008 Beijing Olympics

The international sports gathering is just about midway through, and has so far been relatively free from politics being directly maneuvered into sharing the spotlights. Indeed, unlike what earlier indications may have suggested... which on the onset seemed to already have had a few eyebrows ready to be unsurprised were their need to be raised ever came up.

However, while the event itself has been more or less muted in its being associated with politically driven disruptions, the message of global harmony that the quadrennial gathering of nations is meant to foster... has on the other hand exemplified in contrast... the fragile nature of our societies' ability to muster enough sense on that very idea of "one world", as this time... Russia and Georgia have both decided to demonstrate. Again, the all too often tragic outcome... innocent lives lost, displaced populace and societies even scarred!

How ironic it is indeed, that in the midst of the Games... a conflict would manage to arise anyway. As nations compete in goodwill... we are reminded how under ever lurks our human capacity to let be blinded just the same, how easily we let reason escape... as individuals, as nations...
